Shopping in Phnom Penh

PDF Print E-mail

Phnom Penh offers some great shopping and bargains abound. The large local markets are the best spots to start from for everything from silk scarves, curios and carvings to bootlegged CDS. Check out Psar Thmei (Central Market), and absolutely make sure that you get to the Psar Tuol Tom Pong (Russian Market) as well. Be prepared to haggle. Most markets open from 6.30 am till 5.30am, though some shops open into the evening. Sorya Shopping Center is the modern, air-conditioned shopping mall; it has a food court for those needing to load up on energy for more shopping.

Heritage Silk

Cambodian silk is one of the best buys. Much of it is hand-woven using traditional looms and dyed with colors derived from plants, minerals and even the odd piece of wood and rusty nail. Bolts of fabric and clothes can be found at the Russian market and in silk shops such as Lotus Pond, Silk & Pepper and Bliss.

Buy for a Cause

Support a cause by visiting fair trade shops selling handicrafts and textiles made by disadvantaged and physically handicapped Cambodians. The showroom in the Artisans Association of Cambodia displays work from member organizations. Other shops include Khemara Handicrafts, run by an NGO and a women’s self-help group, and Tabitha, which uses proceeds for rural projects such as digging wells for clean water.

Art

A new generation of Cambodian artists has sprung up and their art is displayed in chic boutiques along Street 240 and Street 178, also known as Art Street. Reyum Gallery was one of the first in Phnom Penh to create a space for revolving exhibitions of work by contemporary Cambodian artists. Several top hotels, restaurants and cafes allocate space to displaying art or photography.

Gems

Cambodian gems, especially sapphires and rubies, come from Pailin. Gem dealers are found at the Central and Russian markets as well as listed jewelers. However, be aware that the cuts are not as precise by western standards, and be a little informed about gems before spending too much. An expat favorite is Mr Sit Down on Sihanouk Boulevard.
