Siem Reap is more than just temples and more temples. There are many side attractions, including exploring its lush and pristine countryside, or checking out a surprisingly large number of initiatives in sustainable tourism.

Day Trip on Tonle Sap

The most common is the 1 ½ hour tour out through Chong Kneas, but this is just a quick ride through the floating village, and a stop on a large, uninviting barge with crocodile pits, small fish farms and a dismal set of aquariums.

A better idea is to opt for a full day option which goes to the flooded forest around Kampong Phluk. This is a fishing village with around 3,000 inhabitants living in houses built on 6-7m tall bamboo stilts. When the lake water level drops, the mangrove forests are exposed. Hire a boat from Chong Kneas for around US$30 round trip, or get there through a combined road/boat trip via Roulous.

Ecotourism

Osmose is a conservation group which runs day trips to the lush Preak Toal bird sanctuary. Preak Toal is one of three biospheres on Tonle Sap and the rare breeds found here include the rare adjutant and painted Storks, the milky stork and the spot-billed pelican. Osmose charges US$80 a person and proceeds go towards educating the villagers and kids about the importance of protecting the birds and the environment.

Other worthwhile ecotourism activities can be found through Stay Another Day  which organizes trips to organizations where you can shop for souvenirs and handicrafts, learn to cook, go on a nature tour or watch a cultural performance and know that some of the money spent is going to a good cause.

Up, up and Away

Go up 200m in the air on a tethered balloon west of Angkor wat, Get great, aerial views over ten minutes for US$12. For a taste of the past, get on an elephant at the Angkor Thom South Gate in the morning and up Phnom Bakheng in the evenings.
