Accommodations in Cambodia

Every conceivable form of accommodation is now available in Cambodia, from the US$2 backpacker joint to 5 star+ unabashedly plush resorts and boutique hotels. The nicer hotels are often found in the center of the towns, making it easy to walk around. Hotel accommodation often fills up in the winter high season, especially the finer hotels nearest Angkor Wat. Rates are also higher then whereas discounts can be expected in the low season.

Hotel Taxes

Most hotels in the top range impose an extra 10%government tax, 2% tourist tax. Some will charge 10% for service. Booking online or through a travel agent is considerably cheaper than the walk-in rate. Most rates are quoted in US dollars although places near the Thai border cite baht prices. Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Kep have lodgings for all budgets.

Budget Guesthouses

Budget guesthouses used to be found only in the major urban centers but with tourism taking off, they are now in other provincial capitals such as Kratie, Stung Treng and Kampot. These can go for between US$2-US$5 a night. Air-conditioned comfort and TV come with daily rates around US$20 and for US$50, there is the possibility of rather nice lodgings with a swimming pool.

Ultra-luxe

On the other end of the scale, the ultra-luxe Amansara in Siem Reap offers large, spacious suites with private plunge pools and a personal assistant for $1000 a night. Hip and cool Hotel De La Paix has indulgent duplex spa suites with an expansive private rooftop terrace with garden and oversize plunge bath for $500 a night. In Phnom Penh, the grand historic Raffles Le Royal provides old world charm and new world comfort for $300 a room. However, try getting a reservation in high season.
